My interpretation is that these vegetarian species found a local maximum and optimize their survival by living as a single entity without reproduction. They typically lives as a group or grove which is the case for giant sequoias. Since they lives so much longer comparing with other species, it makes them seems isolated or "selfish". The longest living species (insects & algaes) does not have a long live but they just reproduce faster to adapt to the new environments. They do not even have concept of "self" which is new for human or highly developed animals.
