The idea of WiMAX is to replicate the success of WiFi in an open (Ethernet based) platform. The application you write for PC/PDA/SmartPhone will be the same except for the screen size and bandwidth constraints (IMS profiles). The problem is that the deployment cost is still too high and no real killer application has emerged yet. That is the reason why Google is a strategic investor to the Sprint-ClearWire alliance as well as Time-Warner (content provider). It might work if it can escape the downturn of the economy due to high energy and food costs. If it failed, there is a reason why the 4G cell phone is called the "Long Term" Evolution :)

no real killer application has emerged yet --> some times I wonder what it really means ? Is it means we develop something because it is faster and we don't know what it can do ? Let's wait and see what will happen ? I think this kind of thought do the job at 1970's EE or 1990's IT but it is 21th century. Bio-Industry can do that . But not EE or IT. It is a old business now.
